Dover, England

June 15

Yesterday, Duane sang in the cruise choir.  They practiced every sea day.  It was a good performance.  This time I did not join the choir and decided to be in the audience, for once.  We both enjoyed our parts.

Today Duane didn’t feel very well.  He was coughing quite a bit.  So I went into town to get him some cough medicine.  Also, since we have a week between the end of this cruise and the cruise home, we have to decide whether to stay in Dover or travel around England or take the chunnel and go to France and stay with couchsurfers we hosted.  Touch choices.  So I went into town to see what there was to do in Dover and the surrounding area.

We were supposed to have a shuttle bus to take us into town.  Supposed to…..It turns out the ship forgot to order the shuttles.  Since most of the time that ships dock in Dundee and passengers disembark, it is the end of a cruise and no shuttles to town are needed.  This cruise is the exception, since only 300 of the 650 passengers got off and another 300 got on.  So the 350 of us left would have loved to have a way of getting the 3 miles from the port to the town center.

Luckily I met three people at the information table who were as surprised as I was about the shuttle.  So we shared a taxi.  So everything worked out OK.  One of the 3 people walked around town with me and we shopped a little.  I was worried about Duane, we came back to the ship.  Duane was doing much better, glad to say.  Some extra sleep might have helped.

While at the information table, I found out that there are lots of things to do in and around Dover, so we are staying here when the cruise ends.  The problem was that the hotel were we are booked for the first 2 nights does not have availability for the night before the next cruise.  That does make sense.  I didn’t think of it when we were home and I was planning.  So I spent some more time on the computer at that hotel trying to book another room for the rest of our stay.  Without going into more detail, the hotel computer didn’t work, the taxi didn’t show up until after the fifth phone call, but all is well and as the expression goes, we “threw money at it” to solve the problem.

So on to the fun stuff, the pictures.

Here are some pictures from town

This is St Edmund’s Walk.  We would call it an alley.  Nice alley, hey. And who would expect to see a YMCA here in Dover, England.

Oh, yeah, the CLIFFS.  And white they are……
